Keynote speech When the pressure is on: how great teams perform at sea

Real-world leadership lessons from 40,000 miles at sea and one of the world’s toughest team environments.

Oliver Irvine is a professional ocean yacht racing skipper and leadership speaker. Over thousands of miles at sea he has learned how to turn a group of strangers into teams capable of achieving extroardinary things in the harshest conditions the world can offer.

As the winning skipper of Team GOSH in the 25/26 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, he led a constantly changing crew to a record breaking victory.

He now brings those real-world experiences into organisations, sharing practical lessons on leadership, team development, culture and resilience.

No boardroom theory, just lessons learned the hard way, in an environment where decisions have immediate and very real consequences.

60 strangers. One team. 42000 miles. 7 race wins. Record breaking points total.

“This was leadership with nowhere to hide. In the middle of an ocean, thousands of miles from land, decisions had consequences. In the worst conditions, mistakes could damage the boat, compromise the team’s safety and, in the most serious situations, have fatal consequences. There was no office to retreat to, no easy reset and no option to simply wait for the pressure to pass.

Over eleven months, I had to lead constantly changing teams through some of the most demanding environments on the planet. I learned how to build trust quickly, create psychological safety without lowering standards, develop people while still delivering performance, and give teams enough ownership to make good decisions without relying on the leader for every answer.

Those are the principles I now bring to organisations. I show teams how to turn trust into accountability, how to create cultures where people actively develop themselves and each other, and how to maintain high standards when pressure and uncertainty start to erode performance. My talks combine the real stories of leading at sea with practical ideas that teams can take back into their own working environment and put into practice.”
